There are such wide a variety of nuts in the world. Most of them are great for snacking on whereas others have more creative destinies. In this article, I just want to look at a handful of nut varieties and where in your baking or cooking you can use them in.
One of my favourite types of nut is the almond. This nut has a lovely smooth flavour and it is versatile in its uses. It is a low fat nut which is very healthy and almond milk has no cholesterol. Almonds can be used in the baking of cookies, in cakes, muffins, various desserts and specialty breads. The almond adds a great nutty flavour to your baked goods and can be used in almost anything you bake. It is that versatile. Even if the recipe doesn't include almonds, you could still add it. I also enjoy adding almonds as edible decoration on cakes or desserts. Get creative and make patterns or designs on a cake. Get your children involved and let them design their own almond cupcakes.
Pecan nuts are also used in baking. It is a bit more of challenging nut in that it has a hard outer shell which you'll need to crack before you can start with your recipe. Alternatively, you could acquire them already shelled. Once you crack that nut, you can use it in dessert recipes, cookies and certain tarts. Pecan nut tarts are delightful. These nuts do have a higher fat content than almonds but they are high in fibre and are good for a balanced diet. You can also roast pecan nuts and have them as an in-between meal snack.
Cashew nuts are also very popular. They can be used in baking but are used more in cooking. They have high nutritional properties in terms of antioxidants and energy. Cashew nuts have soft creamy texture and are often coated to add more flavour elements such as caramel or peri peri. They are often used in stir fries and salads due to their balance of crunchiness and softness. It also used in many Asian cuisines.
These are only a few types of nuts that can be used in baking and even in cooking or as light snacks. Each one has its nutritional benefits and its uses in baking. With so many nuts out there, it makes baked goods more interesting and a lot of fun.
